Assam Tourism Ministry recently released a promotional video featuring Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra and it hasn’t seemed to have gone down too well with some viewers.
The video has played the State Anthem ‘O mur apunar dex’ and the artistes can be seen to be dancing in different forms. That has been opposed by many people as they felt it is an insult to the revered song.
“I felt hurt after I heard about it. O mor apunar dex symbolises our state. Everyone stands up when it is played. It is an insult to our anthem that people are dancing while it is being played,” said Sahitya Akademi awardee and former president of Asam Sahitya Sabha, Lakhinandan Bora.
“The state government accepted O mor apunar dex as the state anthem and set some rules for its performance. If a government department shows people dancing while the anthem is being played, it means they have violated their own rules. This is very unfortunate,” said Sabha general secretary, Paramananda Rajbongshi.
Tourism minister Himanta Biswa Sarma releasing the video said, “they would be played on national and regional television channels to attract people to Assam.”
All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) president Dipanka Nath, though, didn’t find any mistake in the video. After watching the video on YouTube, he said, “The visuals reflect what the anthem says. It reflects our communities and their culture.”
